Photographer's Niece by mmuch Photographer's Niece by mmuch
I decided to draw a photo of my grandma, her uncle Celestyn, who was a photographer, and several old cameras (they are beautiful, aren't they?). The photo was taken in Rzeszów, on 3rd of May 1940.

I am proud of this drawing. It took me really long time to draw this. I focused on every single detail, I especially wanted to draw the cameras well.

I submited this drawing once today but I decided to delete it because of my grandmother's face. It was the hardest thing to draw. I have just improved it and, believe me, it looks sooo much better now. I am very ashamed of the earlier version but I think this one is tolerable, even if it still isn't ideal. :P

So, after fighting with this drawing, bringing myself almost to tears (yes! I was really disappointed when I saw it as an eyesore, after spending hour after hour on this drawing :P) and drawing my grandma's face again... I can say I am proud. And I'd love to know what do you think about this work. :)

Drawing the details was pretty fun. :) But I wouldn't have been able to draw it if I hadn't had a great reference. It's incredible how detailed old pictures are!

Thank you!

I hope you will soon enough be in a frame of mind where you can be immensely proud of this, because you so should be!!
I most definitely believe this took you a long time, because the amount of detail you put in here is astonishing! Especially the camera's obviously got a lot of attention and blood, sweat and tears from you! ;) The result is gorgeous!
The likeness and poses of your family members are great, too.
I noticed your earlier comment on how you thought the male was too small compared with your gran. For what it's worth, I don't think so. May seem like that to you purely because of him being hunched over???
Great job on this! You can really pat yourself on the back!

Thank you so much for such a nice comment! It's great to see that you appreciate my effort.
Well, I am quite proud but I still can't stand her face, even if it looks better now. I know there is something wrong about it but I just can't find what is it. I noticed previous defects and I tried to improve them but there's still... something.
I am so pleased that you took a look at the details because those are things that I like the most at this drawing. :)
That's a pity you saw my earlier comment. It was pretty stupid and written under the influence of bad emotions. xD My mom also said that they look similar, especially uncle. I thought about him being hunched over, but it needs to look at him for a moment to notice that.
Thank you again, I'm so happy you think like that! I even started to look at it a little bit less critically.

We always are our own worst critics, aren't we? I'm glad my comment helped you feel better about it. I really think you should focus on the bits you're happy with (which is by far most of the drawing!) more. The rest is just, well, room for improvement, that's all. ;)
I know exactly what you mean by something is off and I can't pinpoint it! Terribly annoying when that happens!

On the other hand, it's good - we don't fall into self-love too much. :P And we can't be always perfect. I'm quite glad that I have something to practise and improve. Being perfect must be boring.
Yeah, that's even more annoying than the moment when your pencil breaks. Horrible.

I haven't broken a pencil yet *knocks on wood*, but I do have one pencil of which the lead keeps breaking every time I try to sharpen it! Also véry annoying.

By saying that my pencil breaks I mean the lead. ^^' My B6 pencils break really often and that's awful because I like to use them the most.

Perhaps an even darker pencil would be a solution? So that you don't have to push down quite as hard on your 6B and still get dark results?

I want to buy some more pencils, especially several darker. I've never had too many of them, because I also don't draw too often. I like to buy about four pencils and slowly check how do they work. It probably makes no sens, but... well. :P
